Unreliable reminder alarm on NexusOne

Asked by Rajen

I use fixed reminders with my tasks on Astrid, but the reminder alarm rarely sounds, though the notification light turns on and the task appears in the notification bar.
I have tried several settings: Persistent mode on/off, Alarm Clock mode on/off, default ringtone/other ringtone, "As Deadlines Approach"/"At Deadlines"/After Absolute Deadlines Passes" on/off, Deadlines set/not set. I have ascertained that Astrid is running in the background. Clearly, when the device is asleep, the audible alarm is not getting trigerred.
What am I doing wrong?
One final question: once the alarm is sorted out, is there a setting by which one can get nagging alarms, namely, repeating alarms till the task alarm is dismissed?
Thanks.

Rajen,

A couple suggestions.
1) if you are using Task Killer you will need to add Astrid to the
exceptions list. Astrid does need to run in the background in order to get
your attention and task killer (or similar applications) would prevent this
from happening.

2) try the following settings: Persistent Mode On, Alarm Clock Mode on,
default Ringtone, Set a deadline and set notifications At Deadline. Do this
for a time a couple minutes in the future and let us know what happens.

Warmly,
Jon

Hi Jon:

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I am not using Task Killer. I tried the settings you suggested. I tried after setting the Absolute Deadline and, on another try, both Absolute and Goal Deadlines. Out of some five or six attempts, only on one the alarm sounded. The notification light turned on each time.

As before, these tests suggest that the reminder alarm cannot be relied upon. Grateful for your further guidance.

Regards,

Rajen.

Rajen,

Can I ask for some clarification?
- you are receiving the notification in the bar at the correct time, but
the problem is there is no sound?
- even when you use alarm clock mode, there is no sound?
- have you noticed this affect any other applications, or just Astrid?
- do you ever get an audible alarm, or does it never happen?
- is your phone silenced, or on normal volume?

This is pretty strange, as I'm pretty sure I've set up notifications the
right way. I wonder if anything is different on the Nexus One, I'll have
to look into it. Sorry for the problems you're experiencing.

If anyone else has a Nexus One and can report their experiences, that
would also be helpful.

Hi Tim:

Below are answers to your questions:

- you are receiving the notification in the bar at the correct time, but
the problem is there is no sound? YES.
- even when you use alarm clock mode, there is no sound? YES.
- have you noticed this affect any other applications, or just Astrid? JUST ASTRID. ANOTHER TODO APP, "AK NOTEPAD", SOUNDS THE ALARM RELIABLY EVERY TIME.
- do you ever get an audible alarm, or does it never happen? IT DOES HAPPEN SOMETIMES, MAYBE ONCE OUT OF 10 TIMES, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PICK UP ANY CLUE TO WHAT THAT EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION IS THAT TRIGGERS THE AUDIBLE ALARM ONCE IN A WHILE.
- is your phone silenced, or on normal volume? NORMAL VOLUME.

Thanks for your assistance.

Rajen.

Rajen,

Sorry, haven't figured out what the source of your problem is, just need a few more questions answered.

In the settings menu, there is a "Notification Ringtone" setting. What is the selected option?

If you select different options from that menu, (1) are you able to hear the "sample" sounds as you pick different ringtones from the menu, and (2) does changing the ringtone from this menu fix your problem?

Thanks.

Hi Tim:

First, answers to your questions: I can hear the sample sounds and changing the ringtone did not solve the problem.

However, the problem does appear to be solved because of some other actions. I updated Astrid and got a message that there was a task killer on my phone, namely, the Dolphin browser. I was asked to put Astrid on the exclusions list of Dolphin. I could not find the exclusions list in the Dolphin settings. Grateful for your guidance on this. Nevertheless, to check whether this was the cause of the problem, I uninstalled Dolphin and the alarm now appears to be working.

Do let me know where the Dolphin browser exclusion list is to be found in the Dolphin browser settings.

Thanks for your support.

Rajen.

Dolphin affected Astrid! really surprising. I have never used Dolphin before so I'll have to take a look at it some time. Sounds like your problem is addressed for now? Sorry about the trouble!
