[E] Error: rsync: send_files failed to open "/etc/at.deny": Permission denied (13) and others

Asked by tellapu

Hi all,

In Ubuntu 10.10 I use backintime and had no problems so far. I switched from the official backintime version 0.96 to the ppa:bit-team/stable version 1.06. The transfer to the new structure seemed to work. But as I try to backup I get these errors:

[E] Failed to take snapshot 14/01/11 17:31:05 !!!

If I don't include the etc-folder in the settings everything works without error and the snapshot would complete. I looked into the older snapshots (done with BIT 0.96) and found that these denied folders and files were not backuped so far, so they were perhaps omitted because of the errors, but the snapshots were continued/completed.
At the same time I can not connect to a windows computer anymore through the network/Samba (Unable to mount location - Failed to retrieve share list from server). I am not aware that I changed something, but also not sure if it is related to these denied folders/files.

So I have several questions:
Are the permissions of these folders/files set correctly? Mainly permissions only to the owner, sometimes write-permission to the group (but nothing to others). Or do I have to change the permission, so backintime can access it, e.g 755 (as mentioned in another question: https://answers.launchpad.net/backintime/+question/120182)?
Or do I check the option in the settings "continue on errors (keep incomplete snapshots)"?
Or do I exclude each of the denied folders and files in the settings?
Is there any relationship between this and the network error?

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

BIT can backup everything that it can read, but some files in /etc are not even readable as a normal user.
Until BIT 1.0 there was not error checking so everything was sunshine. Starting from BIT 1.0 the application check for rsync error and report them. You can select from settings dialog to "continue on errors". This way you will have the old behavior.

You can also include only the files from /etc that you can read.
There is a feature request (not implemented yet) to allow to include using wildcards (ex: /etc/*.cfg).

The choice is yours depending on your needs.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Wow, that was quick! So there is no relationship to the samba-network-problem and I have to search further for that one, so far without success :-(. Hopefully I will get such a quick answer as well somewhere ...

Thanks a lot,

tellapu

I can't say 100% sure but for you case it see that you just can't read some files from etc as normal user (and it is normal too).

Dan
