When using boot-repair, interface shows up with everything blank

I'm attempting to use boot-repair running ubuntu 12.04 off a live disk, and I am finding that when it starts up and its GUI is lanched, all of the fields are blank. For example, dialog boxes come up with only () or . as their description, and the interface has various check boxes and drop down menus but no words. Is this a known bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Extra information: this is a new Asus UX32V "ultrabook". It has a 24GB SSD built on and a 0.5TB HD. I left the OEM windows 7 installation intact on the HD and installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on the SSD. Grub is booting ubuntu fine but it won't boot windows 7 ("invalid efi path"); and at some point in screwing around I seem to have killed the windows boot-loader as well as it won't do anything except bring you back to the computer's setup utility. From what I read Boot-Repair is the appropriate tool to solve the problem but I can't do much since it doesn't appear to be working. Also during an earlier phase of this setup (when I was trying, incorrectly, to use ubuntu 32-bit and it wouldn't boot at all) I tried Boot-Repair when booting off the same live disk and it worked normally.
