Live-CD options for USB linux install

I have a USB stick with a Linux installation that I use for troubleshooting and repairs on a bunch of machines. The problem is that it's not a live CD or USB, so I can't select the "OS to boot by default" option to repair the GRUB installation on a hard drive of a PC I'm booting with the USB key.

Is it possible to change this?

Please connect this USB, run Boot-Repair --> Create BootInfo Summary, and indicate the URL that will appear.

The result is the same whether I select yes or no for /dev/sdb being removable

Please connect the USB, and go into Boot-Repair --> Advanced Options--> "GRUB location" tab. Which options are available in the "OS to boot by default" list ?

Here are the options:

sdb3 (The OS now in use - Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS)
sda1 (Ubuntu 12.04.03 LTS)
Windows (via sdb3 menu)

sdb3 is the Ubuntu located on your USB.

If you select "sda1 (Ubuntu 12.04.03 LTS)", Boot-Repair will repair the GRUB installation on the HDD.

Yes, no it won't:

Because when I select "sda1 (Ubuntu 12.04.03 LTS)", Boot-Repair produces a pop up window saying "Please use this software in a live session (Live-CD or Live-USB). This will enable this feature".

Which what brought me here in the first place. Goto 10.

Can you provide any more information about what would need to be changed, and why you cannot change it? I also have this issue.
