relation between launchpad account and SSO ID

Asked by Ross Boylan

Is my account on launchpad and my SSO ID the same thing, or are they 2 separate things?

launchpad says my openid login is https://launchpad.net/~rossboylan; is that something different from the Canonical SSO login?

Somewhat (OK; very) confusingly, there's a single SSO system which presents itself at both https://login.launchpad.net/ and https://login.ubuntu.com/ using two different brandings (but the accounts and passwords are simultaneously valid across both).

Further confusing everyone, despite https://login.launchpad.net/ being branded to *look* like Launchpad, it isn't Launchpad itself. If, for example, you wanted to add/remove an email address, you'd probably want to do it within both Launchpad and SSO (the change will not propagate automatically).

The best way to think about it is:
 * SSO ID and Launchpad account are separate
 * SSO ID is a means to authenticate yourself
 * Launchpad account is all the information required to represent you in Launchpad

In particular, your Launchpad account does not have a password of any kind.

Adding external OpenID usage to the mix makes things even more complicated :-)

Your OpenID is primarily provided through the SSO system, *but*, for legacy reasons, your convenient memorable form login URL is on the launchpad.net domain.

Can you help with this problem?
