barcode recognition?

hi, i am looking for linux based barcode recognition software, need to encode lots of stuff, so thinking about 2D ones, like PDF 417

Unfortunately this is completely off the base here. Cuneiform is a character recognition system. You may wish to google for http://www.google.ru/search?q=linux+barcode ...

OK, let's put it this way: unfortunately, Cuneiform does not recognize barcodes, although they ARE characters. Does it sound better?

Look at zxing -- it's a java barcode recognition engine.
