Is gapless mode in the works?

Asked by jenningsthecat

Hi there: I just installed version 1.02. I love the interface - simple, clean, and accesses my carefully maintained directory structure nicely from inside the app. And as a bonus, there are some cool extra features that are available, but not obtrusive. In short, it's everything I've been looking for, (and I've tried well over a dozen music players looking for what I want), EXCEPT that it doesn't do gapless mode. Unfortunately this is a deal-breaker for me, as I listen to a lot of music where there is, (or should be), no audible transition point between tracks. Is there a true gapless mode in the works for Decibel? Even if it's only for FLAC, OGG, and the like?

When it comes to music players under Linux that have true gapless capability, it seems that I'm limited to extremely simplistic and really clunky-looking players, (Audacious), or full-blown database-driven monster music managers, (Rhythmbox, Listen, and all of the mpd frontends). Then there are players with a 'gapless' mode that either doesn't really work, (Amarok), or uses a very audible crossfade kludge, (several other players). It sure would be great if Decibel added true gapless mode to its other terrific features!

Can you try to use the --playbin2 flag when starting DAP? E.g., typing "decibel-audio-player --playbin2" in a terminal. It should do gapless playback quite well, is it what you expect?

Be aware that some older versions of GStreamer may lead to crashes sometimes, that's why it's not the default. In the latest Ubuntu (Karmic) it works perfectly fine.

Hi there: My apologies for not getting back to you earlier; I've had other problems with my computer, and being new to Linux, I've had a lot of catching up to do.

Thanks for your prompt reply, and yes, the switch you specified works perfectly. So far, it looks as though DAP is my new player!

Thanks again!

Paul Taylor

PS Should I also post this reply on Launchpad?
