Can I stack eCryptfs on top of NTFS?

Asked by Cliff

I have a removable drive on which I want to create encrypted backups for multiple systems. NTFS is the only cross-platform, permissions-capable filesystem that I can use between Windows and Linux, without installing extra software. Is is possible for me to stack eCryptfs on top of NTFS? I'm hesitant to just try because I know that eCryptfs uses extended attributes, and I'm not sure if the Linux NTFS drivers implement some form of extended attributes, possibly using hidden streams, or if eCryptfs has some workaround, or what.

Not yet, but Tyler Hicks says he's getting very close to having this working.

Whoops, I *totally* misread your question...

You said "NTFS" and I read "NFS".

As for NTFS, I *think* ecryptfs should work, but I've not tried it
myself. Tyler, have you ever tried it?

ecryptfs over an ntfs filesystem did not work for me. ecryptfs over ext4 works except for the nfs issue mentioned above. I believe files were not getting either encrypted or decrypted using NTFS as the underlying filesystem of ecryptfs.

Can you help with this problem?
