Nova or Neutron

Asked by Savanna

Hi,

While creating cloud environment, we are given options to choose Nova or Neutron. What is the difference ? Which one is better to go ? And if I am doing VLAN tagging my switch should I select the Neutron with VLAN segmentation option ? And also if I am VLAN tagging should I go for VLAN manager instead of flatDHCP manager in network settings.?

Thank You

Both Nova-network and Neutron are two different implementations of "networking as a service" for OpenStack.
Nova-network is old one and currently it is obsoleted. It is based mostly on iptables and has some deplorable design flaws.
Neutron is modern and more reliable.

So if you are new to OpenStack and you have no any legacy projects you should better stick to Neutron.

You can watch the following presentations to become acquainted with technical details:

Here it is one more good OpenStack Networking introduction including information on both Neutron and Nova-network:

I would correct Nikolay's point and say that Nova-Network is still not obsolete because Neutron is not quite stable. Actually, nova-network is performing good, but it has some limitations on network topologies and does not support network virtualization as much as Neutron does. Moreover, it does not support configuration of switches, it does not support openflow out of box. But, to be sure, nova-network is more rock-solid and stable than neutron, but it requires more manual configuration than neutron for VLAN allocation, switch configuration and it is going to become obsolete as soon as Neutron provides all its functionality with the same stability.
