f4580 support in 3.10.2 (Ubuntu Lucid)?

Asked by landroni

Dear hplip devels
I am considering to buy an Deskjet f4580 and I'm confused about the support status in hplip. A 2009 [1] answer stated that F4500 series support was planned. While a 2010 [2] answer stated: 'HP Deskjet F4580 is presently not supported by HPLIP, however HP Deskjet F4500 is supported by HPLIP.'

The supported list contains an entry for 'HP Deskjet f4500 All-in-one Printer *Series*' [3], but does this mean that f4580 is supported? Thank you in advance2

After more reading on the Internet and no help from this forum, I went ahead and bought the HP DeskJet F4580. Several points:
- it is supported in Xubuntu Lucid, and Ubuntu automatically configured the USB interface (it only required to have hplip installed and to plug in the USB cable). It uses the F4500 driver
- it can be configured for WiFi use via a temporary USB connection, using the hplip GUI (so no Windows required)
- WiFi installation was performed very quickly (30sec tops, with printer, router and laptop all in same room)
- it supports both scan and print over WiFi
- unlike reports elsewhere, it can print black & white documents without problems even if the colour cartridge is not installed (or is empty, I suppose)
- as reported elsewhere, the device does go on standby after several minutes of being idle, and the hplip GUI lost connection to the device (displayed it as 'device communication error'); however, sending a page to print via Evince (GTK+) woke the device up via wireless and the document printed just fine. So I guess that Windows/Mac users experiencing such issues with the device should consider moving to Linux
- unlike on other platforms, the hplip software is anything but intrusive and (sofar) works like a charm for this device
- compared with my old HP PSC 1215, it's roughly the same size and seems to print and scan (much) faster

So kudos for the developers. I'm still looking out for ink consumption issues (reported elsewhere), but that should be just it. HTH

- from the negative, as reported elsewhere, it does tend to jam pages when in 'fast draft' mode; upon quick checks it effectively makes the printer unusable in this mode.

I should qualify the last post:
the device jams pages when in 'fast draft', but only if one or very few pages are fed. If you put in the paper tray 10-20 pages the printer keeps being aggressive when grabbing the paper, but (sofar) doesn't jam

PS Sorry for the previous double post, caused by buggy behaviour of launchpad
