Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Thank you Naga Samrat Chowdary, Narla

the instructions on editing /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat seems to apply to j410 (1050), not to j510 (2050)

should I just wait for next hplip or use those recommended values on my j510?

Please use the recommended values for j510.
In the next release of HPLIP these values available in models.dat file.

Thanks,
Naga Samrat Chowdary, Narla

suggestion in bug note worked great, I transcript:

Please download the latest HPLIP 3.10.9 from www.hplipopensource.com site and install.
once installed open /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat file as root.
edit section "deskjet_1050_j410_series" and set "io-mfp-mode=1" and "scan-type=7" and save the file.

quit hp-toolbox / hp-systray if it is running.

launch "xsane" from terminal.

Thanks,
