Hi,

Can you post us the out-put of "hp-check -t" command and provide the debug output of "hp-setup -g" command.

Thanks,
Kodu

Thanks Kodu

I am a newbie to the terminal and to commands. I would appreciate step by
step instructions on exactly how to forward the information you require.

Should a LaserJet 5 be able to operate using HPLIP?

I have loaded HPLIP + HPLIP Tool Box through the Ubuntu Software Centre and
my LaserJet 5 is still not recognised. I thought that perhaps, it was the
parallel/USB cable? However, I run a dual boot sysyem: Ubuntu 11.10 and
Windows Vista. Windows Vista "sees" my LaserJet 5 and loads the driver and
the printer works fine on Vista. But Ubuntu 11.10 even with HPLIP installed
doesn't "see" the LaserJet 5. Could I fix using the HPLIP Toolbox or by
removing/reinstalling, switching ON/OFF, etc.

Thanks John

Please download and install hplip-3.11.10 from hplipopensource.com. Run "hp-setup" in commandline and it should detect the printer.

I too have an HP LaserJet 5M with a duplexer running under Kubuntu 11.10. I can print on it, but apparently the control commands aren't being processed correctly (or not at all). The printer prints in duplex mode no matter how I set it up.

This is a relatively new problem, although I don't know when it started. In older versions of Kubuntu, one-sided printing was done correctly. One-sided printing also works in OpenSuSE 11.3 and of course in Windows, though the Windows 7 driver has to be retrieved from an archive.

The LaserJet 5/5M is not on the list of supported printers for hplip.

Nevertheless, I tried installing hplip using the installer hplip-3.12.4.run. The installation got most of the way through, but then hung up with the message "Configure failed with error: python-devel not found". I tried

sudo apt-get install python-devel

but the package could not be found.

Thanks for your info. However, it looks like the latest hplip (with
whatever updates have been installed) doesn't support our old (but
reliable) laserjets.

I use Ubuntu 11.10 (shortly to become 12.04); I also have Windows Vista and
find that if I convert any ubuntu files to pdf - I can print them quite
successfully with Vista.

I'm not too "clued-up" about the technicalities but have found a
"work-around" that suits me.

Thanks

John

This device support parallel port. As the parallel port generation have moved out and USB and wifi generation have come in. We will have to depericate the parallel port support.

I can help you with a work around to enable the parallel port support in HPLIP drivers.

Download the hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz file from http://space.dl.sourceforge.net/project/hplip/hplip/3.12.4/hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz.

Untar the file,

tar -xvf hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz

Enter into hplip-3.12.4 source directory.

cd ./hplip-3.12.4

Run the below configuration script with the options provided :

./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-pp-build --enable-udev-acl-rules --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

--enable-pp-build will enable the Parallel port support in HPLIP drivers.

Next run,

make &

sudo make install

Let us know this has helped you.

CUPS claims to support the LaserJet 5/5M, and that's what I've been using. But as I said earlier, it gets the duplexing (and maybe other things too) wrong.

I'm actually using a network interface on the printer, which works just fine but of course is not native to the printer -- it's a plug-in unit. I suppose that doesn't make a difference as far as the software is concerned.

I tried to run hp-check but apt-get could not find it. Where can I get it?

I did as suggested:

Download the hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz file from http://space.dl.sourceforge.net/project/hplip/hplip/3.12.4/hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz.

Untar the file,

tar -xvf hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz

cd ./hplip-3.12.4

Run the below configuration script with the options provided :

./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-pp-build --enable-udev-acl-rules --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

--enable-pp-build will enable the Parallel port support in HPLIP drivers.

Next run,

make &

sudo make install

(There was a blip because I was lacking python-devel, and apt-get couldn't find it. But I guessed that python-dev would work, and it did.)

Then I ran hp-setup. Since my printer has a network interface plugged into the parallel port, I selected Network, then Advanced Options, where I specified the IP address of my LaserJet 5M and Manual Discovery. But alas, I got the message "No devices found".

What now?

OK, I ran hp-check. Lots of output, but I think the only interesting part is this:

LaserJet

Type: Unknown
Device URI: socket://192.168.0.11:9100
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/LaserJet.ppd
PPD Description: HP LaserJet 5MP Postscript (recommended)

warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.

I can provide more output if it's useful.

Are you able to ping to the IP of the printer ?
Please provide the "hp-setup -g" output.

The printer can be pinged and does actually work -- it just gets the duplexing (and possibly other) things wrong. Here's the output you asked for:

What's particularly interesting is that according to http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_5M, the printer is supported perfectly, with support provided by HPLIP. But HPLIP does not list this particular printer as being supported.

I have this exact issue. I have an HP LaserJet 5.

Do these instructions work for Mint 11?
I have followed them. When I type in hp-check-t, it says "no command is found." I have asked in the Mint forum and no one can figure it out.

Any ideas? thanks.
