HP Officejet Pro 8610 looses connection

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 and HPLIP 3.15.6 on a wired/wireless network. I have the latest updates on both Ubuntu and HPLIP, as well as the router's firmware.
Periodically, the computers loose contact with the 8610. I can reboot printer and computers and still cannot print to the 8610. Running sudo hp-setup -r, followed by sudo hp-setup on each Ubuntu computer will enable them to print again.

The router sees the printer even when I get a communication error on it. Running hp-check shows all dependencies and options as "OK".

I am postulating that when the 8610 goes to sleep during periods of inactivity, HPLIP sometimes forgets how to wake it up, but I haven't found a way to test this hypothesis. (I haven't looked real hard, either.)

My workaround, of course, is to remove and reinstall the printer whenever hplip looses it. However, there are times when my users need the printer and I'm not close by to log in and do this.

Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Thank you for reporting us this issue. We tried to reproduce the same in our test environment. We allowed the printer to go to inactive mode and launched hp-toolbox and we could see the status as power save mode and we were able to print without having to reconfigure the printer.
 It will be helpful to debug this issue if you can provide us some log file. If you are able to reproduce the issue please provide us 'hp-check' output and the ping output to the printer.

Hi goutam.
It is an intermittent problem - so notoriously tricky to try to catch. It may be several days or even weeks before it recurs.
I will run hp-check again whenever this occurs again.
Unfortunately, when I ran hp-check after re-installing the printer, the earlier log was overwritten with the error messages.

I will run it and post it here when it happens again. Thanks for your patience.

Just in case it is useful:
When runing the HP Device manager, an error message pops up:

When running the hp-check, a trio of lines that do not seem to make it into the log but are shown on the screen are:

Another question that popped into my head while I was doing this - I ran hp-setup on the computer that I had not fixed, then returned to my main computer to find it had lost connection as well. Is there some sort of conflict when two different computers set up the same printer? Or is that just coincidence?

Did my info from hp-check help you find the problem?

Another circumstance that may or may not impact the problem: we had a power outage the evening that the problem reoccurred. Both the printer and the computer were powered down (and the computer is on a UPS). I don't know how, or if, that would cause the loss of communication.

We are still looking in the issue. Unfortunately we are not able to reproduce the same in our test environment.

I've not had the problem recur since my 2015-06-18 post above.

Hello, again, Goutam.
I did have the problem again yesterday - the day after a thunderstorm which caused the power to flicker. The printer is not on a UPS, although the computer and wireless routers are.

I don't know that a mere cutting off of the power to the printer, computers and routers would replicate a power flicker from a thunderstorm, for there is some serious voltage fluctuation going on as well that we don't get in unplugging the components. YMMV

I am now postulating that the real problem lies in something about the computer, the wireless routers and printer that a power fluctuation causes to break down. I do not know why removing and adding the printer using hplip-setup fixes this.

I pinged the printer and was unsuccessful at reaching it. I removed and re-installed the printer and got it back that way.
