Only option for searching for printers is USB

Asked by B Rausch

I'm trying to set up printing on my HP laptop, which is running Funtoo, to connect to my HP PhotoSmart 6520 printer. I have taken the steps recommended in the Gentoo wiki article on this package (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/HPLIP#Installation) but when I try to run "hp-setup -i [ip address]" I get the message:

"Using connection type: usb

error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality."

Now, I'm trying to connect to an IP, so of course the connection type being usb is off. I opened the graphical utility HP Device Manager and confirmed: I can only scan for printers over usb, all other options are grayed out. I want to be able to connect to printers over my network, not just via USB.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied
tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package
(.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed
to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of
the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Done.

I tried "emerge libnetsnmp-devel" to get the one missing package, but to no avail, it's not part of Gentoo/Funtoo's Portage tree.

Issue was unrelated; wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd weren't configured correctly. When I reconfigured those, connecting to network printers suddenly became an option when running hp-setup.
Thanks for the advice, though!
