Printer does NOT print at all anywhere anyhow

Asked by doug nusbaum

When posting a support ticket please send this information along with your report:

1. Your Linux Distribution and version. Ubuntu 15.04
2. Your printer make/model. Laser Jet Pro MFP M127fw
3. If possible, run 'hp-check -t' and post the output. See below. I did not see any problems.
4. A detailed explanation of your problem.
cups shows this:
Showing 1 of 1 active job.

▼ ID ▼ Name User Size Pages State Control
HP_LaserJet_Pro_MFP_M127fw-95 Unknown Withheld 18k 3 processing since
                                                                                                                                          Mon 31 Aug 2015 04:35:42 PM PDT
                                                                                                                                                         "Filter failed"

Job attributes says, among other things, that "filter failed"
Print Que says "processing" But sometimes it says stopped.

I can cancel, restart & otherwise do things to the job. The only thing that I can not do is get the maching to print.

5. Steps to recreate the problem. Any attempt to print anything gives the same result It can be Control P or the command line
like lp -n 1 ~/Money/PayDates for example

doing a search on stopped, or "filter failed" or other relevant terms returns less than nothing. ie a blank screen

I am fairly certain that I closely followed the directions involved in running hplip-3.15.7.run and I saw no errors or problems.
I like to think that I am fairly knowledgable as I have written programs in assembler and started on the internet with mosaic. Before that there was compuserve. I made a 1/2 way decent living as a programmer for about 20 years.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied
tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package
(.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed
to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of
the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

This is an issue with hplip 3.15.7 drivers. I have provided the patch for the same in the bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1476920.
This issue will be resolved in our next version of hplip.

If you wish to go back to hplip-3.15.6. You can download the drivers from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.15.6/hplip-3.15.6.run/download

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Worked perfectly.

I would like to suggest that someone install in flashing BIG RED LETTERS that someone put in a message in the 3.15.7 program that advises people of the problem. I wasted on the order of 6+ hours chasing this down. And I have a fairly solid background in programming and software having made a living in the field, and written in assembler.

I know that the software detects the kind of printer that I have. And I am fairly certain that inserting a case statement to check for hardware that is not compatible because of bugs and printing out a message can not be more than 1 man hour in work.
