Officejet J4580 Prints but can't scan without HPOJ

Asked by Tax Man

Hello I just bought the J4580 because it has the auto document feeder and various reports showed all of its functions working in Linux. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and when I plugged the printer in it immediately autoconfigured as an HP Officjet J4500 series using the J5700 as the make and model for hpijs. Test pages and everything I have printed so far prints perfectly.

Scanning didn't work until I installed hpoj and then it worked perfectly. I can run xsane, access all the options and use the ADF, etc. Problem is hpoj and hplip are obviously not compatible. Since they work perfectly separately I'd really like to get both functions working together. Also what do I do to set up faxing?

Here is the output of hp-check -rt:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP
supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied
package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check
both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

error: 4 errors and/or warnings.

Please refer to the installation instructions at:

Also despite what hp-check says, sane-find-scanner returns the following as the important part:

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x2a12 [Officejet J4500 series]) at libusb:004:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

It seems like this could be relatively easily added to the supported devices list. It's pretty cheap and currently available. Thank you,

Taxman

The HP Officejet J4580 is supported with HPLIP 2.8.6. You are using HPLIP 2.8.2.

Try installing the latest HPLIP from our website: http://hplipopensource.com and you should have better success.

HPLIP 2.8.7 will be coming with Intrepid so if you plan on upgrading to Intrepid your device should be fully supported then.

For more information on this device:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_j4500_series.html

Hope this helps.

Yes, I should have thought of something as simple as that before posting. Can't have everything work unless you get the latest versions. I just happened to try the Intrepid release candidate a few minutes ago and the device works perfectly with everything I've tried so far. Thanks for looking into it.
