hplip-3.9.2.run - Missing REQUIRED dependency: gcc - Which Version?

Asked by sdd

This requires gcc. I have gcc installed already. Version 4:4.3.1-1ubuntu2. Can I make hplip-3.9.2.run use that version or do I need to download another version.

Runing Linux Mint 6.
Photosmart C6180.

Need to upgrade from 2.8.7-0ubuntu6 as I cannot understand how to print 6x4 inch photos. I get a bit of a photo, a mini photo, prints on A4, It is just to hard! Do I set the paper size at print time of set it before. My only successful method of printing a photo is to put it on a memory stick, stick it in the front of the printer and use the printer menus.

I am not impressed!

Linus mint is supported by the automatic installer and has been tested many times by us.

gcc is installed with the build-essential package..please follow the instructions here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

Thanks.

Also for printing 4x6 images you need to check several things--you can get more information here:

After using synaptic to install the missing dependencies, SNMP being the last, not all of it being obvious, especially the gcc stuff.

There is no indication that to get this you need to install build-essential (your message resolved this). If your an experience linux person then maybe it obvious, I am not it seems. It was not until I ran hp-check that the missing optional dependencies became obvious and I am now able to access my network printer.

Once again this is where Windows has the upper hand!

The HPLIP installer takes care of all of the dependency issues on Ubuntu. We test is quite vigorously and the instructions go through using the installer...you don't need to know any of the packages or names because it's all taken care of...

One reason for choosing Mint 6 is that it is based in Ubuntu 8.10.

Is this somthing the Mint developers have broken in Mint.

Also the article you referenced for 6x6 printing covers Genview and KView (could not find KView anywhere).

My problem is that despite setting my Canvas and Image to 6 x 4 landscape I cannot just print them on a 6 x 4 sheet.

When I print I select the printer and the Page Setup tab. It shows Photo Tray selected. When I look at mi image settings my image is reported as 1.367 inches wide and 0.911 height.

The preview show a small part of my image at the top of the paper towards the left. When I print preview I get a different layout although I can see all of the image. When I print I get a tiny but whole picture bottom left.

I have fiddled with the settings a length and have not once printed a full bleed 6 x 4 print unless I put the file on a mem stick and stick it in the front of the printer.

My problem with all of this is that I should just be able to print it. Adjust some parameters possibly but why is it this hard.

Now I have to export and use Gwenview. I have not done this yet but I am not looking forward to the process.

On a more positive note. I think you have done a fab job with the rest of the software. every other aspect is well done and works. I am sorry to be so negative about this one aspect.

Regards

Stuart

Hello Aaron,
I have the same problem using Linuxmint 6 but not able to solve:
INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES
-------------------------------------
warning: There are 6 missing REQUIRED dependencies.
note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection.
warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: gcc (gcc - GNU Project C and C++ Compiler)
warning: This installer cannot install 'gcc' for your distro/OS and/or version.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.

I tried to follow the link you suggested, but in that page everything is done by installer itself (at least this is what I understood).
I also tried hp-check but I do not fully understand messages (e.g cups-devel I'm not able to find in Synaptic...):

to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an
already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

Thanks for explaining this. I ran into the "missing dependency: gcc" error on Ubuntu 10.10 today, and this resolved it for me!
