Impossible to find libsane for Unbuntu 24.04

Asked by Cathy Liautard-Haag

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,
I have for many year an HP scanner/printer. I changed recently of computer and wanted to reinstall hplib but before that I need the libsane package. And I don't manage to install it, or more precisely even if I download libsane package, they don't seem to have have libsane inside ...?:
"sudo apt-get install --assume-yes libsane libsane-dev sane-utils xsane
Lecture des listes de paquets... Fait
Construction de l'arbre des dépendances... Fait
Lecture des informations d'état... Fait
E: Impossible de trouver le paquet libsane" (in French sorry).

Is it normal or am I doing something wrong?

Cheers,

cathy

I assume that the name of the package that you need is libsane1

Remark: if you install the version of HPLIP that has been adapted for Ubuntu with the command

sudo apt install hplip hplip-gui

then you need not care about libsane and other packages, because the needed additional packages are installed automatically.

Hello,

Despite your answer I am still struggling to install hplib.

I have tried the last version of it, as following instructions:

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/install/manual/distros/ubuntu

but when it come to "make", I have the following error message:

|prnt/cupsext/cupsext.c:78:10: fatal error: Python.h: Aucun fichier ou
dossier de ce nom 78 | #include <Python.h> | ^~~~~~~~~~ compilation
terminated. make: *** [Makefile:6364 : cupsext_la-cupsext.lo] Erreur 1 |

My version of python is: Python 3.12.3
and I am with Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

Thanks for your help.

Bests regards,

Cathy

Why do you try the manual installation instead of the automatic one? https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/install/install/index

Can you help with this problem?
