Cannot start HPLIP and meed driver previously available
A couple of years back I tried to install the HPLIP for my HP ENVY 6430e without success.
After a discussion on here I was sent a driver which worked perfectly, print, scan, double sided print everything.
Suddenly it has stopped working. I downloaded the HPLIP 3.24.4.run but I cannot get it to start install.
I had no trouble with the earlier versions just gave it as cmd from memory.
When I installed the earlier version it would print but not scan.
After a conversation on this site I was sent a driver that worked perfectly on all functions.
I cannot find any trace of it now. Perhaps it has been incorporated into HPLIP now.
So first please explain how to run HPLIP from cmd line..
2nd if you are aware of the driver that I was sent I would appreciate getting it again.
Thanks Barry White <email address hidden>
ps there was an ubuntu update but I do not remember whether it was before or after I last used the printer
i had been sent

Which operating system are you running?
If it is Ubuntu, then you may have better luck by installing the modified HPLIP package from the Ubuntu repositories.
sudo apt install hplip hplip-gui
(Note: the Ubuntu repositories do not provide the newest version of HPLIP, but it is sufficiently recent for most HP printers)

Hello Manfred,
I got the hplip-3.22.10 version to run & I answered the quest Y to use the maintainers copy.
The last line o/p to screen was;
Processing triggers for dbus (1.12.20-
Which could be an odd way to finish.
In any case it does not print.
I have had a look for that file that either you, or a support person in Scotland I think, sent me which
ran perfectly & all functions, double sided, multipage scan etc perfectly, but I cannot recognise it.
I am really annoyed that I did not keep it somewhere safe.
Thanks Barry

Hello Manfred,
I have remembered some detail about this problem.
When I installed the current, at that time, version of HPLIP it would print but not scan.
Now it neither prints or scans.
Just now at the home page area I entered HP ENVY 6430e and it reported not found.
Tried several versions of that ident, Not found
Is my printer still supported ?
Do you know why the current version seems to crash because of cups ?
Tomorrow would it be a good idea to uninstall cups and try hplip again ?

Hello Manfred,
I read up on it and found I could restore specific files. So I started it and it disolayed all the files.
I found one that had for its name my HP printer name HP ENVY etc.
I clicked on that and it restored the original file and I could print front and back as well.
Thats the good news; however scanning does not work.
Restored all the files one by one that I could find with names that seemed to refer to scanning, about three all told but it all made no difference. The program reports scanner not responding.
So as the problem might be a file with a non obvious name. Can you suggest any or an alternative
approach to the problem ?

How do you connect the printer to the computer? USB.cable, wireless,...?
What output do you receive for the commands
sane-find-scanner
sudo sane-find-scanner
(of course with the ENVY device powerded on and connected)

Manfred,
Much poking around led me to sane-dll dynamic backend loader.
used /usr/lib/
cd /usr/lib/
dir
led me to a page of many many backends.
From looking at the other later hp backend names it seems that the missing one is;
libsane_hp6430.so.1 or libsane_
Is this the missing file I need. Could not find the .dll mentioned in the man file although this might be it.
Can you send me that file ?

"it seems that the missing one is; libsane_
I doubt that such file exists. As far as I know, the libsane-hpaio library should work for your device.
If you do not find a file with that name in the /usr/lib/
sudo apt install libsane-hpaio
"I seem to have got msg from someone who has lost a file."
Someone linked this question number 817326 (related to HPLIP) to the bug report number 817326 (related to LibreOffice), which is nonsense, because the numbering of questions and bugs is completely independent of each other. It's like assuming that you have the same digits in your telephone number and your birthday.
I removed that link to the bug, which caused the last e-mail notification. Just ignore it.

1. You mistyped the command, it is hpaio and not hapio
2. Don't confuse the name of the package (libsane-hpaio and the file name libsane-hpaio.so.1)
3. Why do you create a link from this question document to a bug report of LibreOffice which do not have anything in common?
The only thing they share is a sequence number; this is the 817326th question document in launchpad, and the other one ist the 817326th bug report, but in completely independent number series.

Is it possible that the programming has not been completed ?
There is a file somewhere on your website that fixes the problem.
On starting xsane it puts a box on screen that says it failed to open device.

Hello Manfred, is it reasonable to assume that the Linux software for my printer does not exist ?
Is there anyone working on it or should I consider buying something else ?
It works ok on my son's Windows computer, so it is not a hardware fault.
It is annoying because I have been able to scan with it for about a year after I was sent that file.
Please advise what course I should adopt.

Manfred, I have no response since my last report that reloading hplip installed the missing three files
in /sane directory. The Xsane program seems to find the printer but cannot get any i/o from the printer.
I can only presume that there is something wrong with one of those files.

This is exactly the same report that happens with Xsane since that update from Ubuntu arrived.
I have tried other scanner programs, hp-uiscan and Skanlite, same result error during i/o
Can you recommend a site that gives detail on cmds that are sent to the printer to do all the functions ?
It seems that cups is common to most, so perhaps scanning cmds are generally the same.
I presume they are all in those four files for hp-6430

I am sorry, but I do not know the details that you are looking for.
Just a remark:
CUPS is "Common UNIX Printing System"
and
SANE is "Scanner Access Now Easy",
Cups has nothing to do with scanning and Sane has nothing to do with printing.

Hello Manfred,
I presume that the file ending in so.1.1.1 contains the printing software because when I only had that
file it printed OK. Now that I have all four files in ----/sane dir somehow the first three are all to do with
scanning. I did a search and found code files for printing and also more about scanning.
So that is what I will look into next.
You might ask the programmers where is the best place to look for this problem.
You might also hint to them that they should have a look !

I came accross a filename which maybe the one I was looking for,

I appear to have tried it and it did not work, but tried after a restart and had success.
I found it in a report I had written on the problem but there no address probably
because it was to be attached to an email.

A file with a name like sane-hp6400.5.gz in the /usr/share/man/man5 directory is a help file used by the man (manual pages) command. Its only use is displaying its contents with the
