Upgrade to Kubuntu 24.04, printer does not function anymore

Asked by HUHU

After upgrading to Kubuntu 24.04, it has become impossible to print anything on my printer, which has worked for at least 5 years.

Printer: HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M281fdw

Any printing trial ends up doing nothing. If I try to print a test page from 'printer system setting', it just says 'The printer is unreachabe at this time.'.

If try to enter the printer setting from the 'printer system setting' (Maintenance | Configure | Open the print queue), it just does nothing. It does not let me in the printer settings.

'hp-check -t' says that 'libcups2', 'libusb-1.0.0-dev', and 'libusb-0.1-4' packages are missing/incompatible. They are not missing, so are they incompatible? Is it because there is not any for Kubuntu 24.04?

I am noob desperately needing guidance. Should you be so kind to help me, please user a language for dummies.
Thank you very much in advance.

Yes there is incompatibilities.
Kubuntu 23.10 uses HPLIP 3.23.12
Kubuntu 24.04 uses HPLIP 3.24.4
Uninstall the HPLIP 3.23.12
Install HPLIP 3.24.4 according to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/install
Which is the newest driver, the automatic installer does not work for 24.04 yet.
All though if you go to your "App Center" on your Ubuntu: Type: hplip in the search box.
There is snap package 3.22.10-7 available. Which is easy to install. Which should work.
Restart after the install.

After the printer is functional you can open a terminal[ctl+alt+t] sudo apt autoremove
will get rid of any unused files.

Thank you for your guidance.

I have downloaded the HPLIP 3.24.4.run file, but as you mentioned, the automatic installer does not work for Ubuntu 24.04 yet. So the file just remains uninstalled on my download folder.

I read further your message and went to 'Discover' (app center). I found snap package 3.22.10-7 and installed it. Then, as instructed in the app description, I went to http://localhost:8000/, where there is a page showing that no printer is installed. I then added a new printer (my printer) from the drop down menu and let the Auto-Detect Driver choose the right driver.

I can see the printer in the system configuration. So I try to print a test page and... nothing happens. Error message: 'No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer"XXX", is cups-browsed running?'
Checking in Synaptic: it is installed (version 2.0.0-0ubuntu10).

My PC still cannot communicate with my printer and I cannot print anything...

Did I do anything wrong?

Thank you in advance.

You did every thing correct. Does Ubuntu find the printer if you hook it up with a USB cable?
Provided you have one. Check your printer's wireless connection has the correct password
and is connected.

Thank you for guiding me further.

The printer was not connect with an USB cable so far, only the Ethernet cable. I had to go hunting one in the dusty obsolete device carton that was forgotten in a dark corner of our home. I could not find one, so I took the one which is dedicated to laser engraver that we use time to time.

Once connected with this USB cable, a 'new printer' was added via http://localhost:8000/. The new printer is now visible in the system settings and printing a test page does finally work. Hurray!
However...

...my PC is short of USB ports (normally all connected). Instead of adding one more USB hub to accommodate the printer, do you think that the local network cable could be used (just a couple a PCs and the printer wired, the rest is wireless)? The printer has never been connected wirelessly as it never worked. I do not particularly want wireless either.

I realize that my problem was solved, but would you think that we could push one bit further with Ethernet connection only?
Thank you so much.

Go to synaptic type hplip toolbox
Their is a hplip-gui you can install it should match the version of hplip you are using.

I thank you for your last message, which however leaves me a bit puzzled.

By installing hplip-gui, dependencies are installed including hplip version 3.23.12, which was the version used when the printer stopped working. As I do not understand a fraction of what I am instructed to do, I installed hplip with all the dependencies anyway. Then added a 'network ' printer via http://localhost:8000/.

The new printer is now visible in the system settings, but printing a test page does not work: 'cfFilterExternal (ipp): Impossible to cancel the printing task'. Incidentally, it seems that all (previous) but 2 printers have disappeared in the printer system settings (the USB ones).

Back to square one.
Snif...

Open Synaptic and remove hplip-gui & hplip 3.23.12
I found a different option:

I removed hplip-gui & hplip 3.23.12 and everything that looks like a dependency.

REMINDER : I am a complete ignorant in Linux commands and have absolutely no idea what would be the consequences if I incorrectly remove a file or another.

I have read the linked page, but I am not sure to understand what it is supposed to do.
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2021/07/install-latest-hplip-ubuntu-20-04-fix/

Is the problem Python2 instead of Python3? If it indeed was for Ubuntu 20.04, is it still the case for Ubuntu 24.04?
Should I faithfully follow what is described on this page?

It feels like letting a by-passer operate a surgery on a living being.

I may try it, but I would need an educated person to confirm that a noob like me can blindly follow what is written on this page, which is already at the brink of my abilities (Linux wise).

Thank you so much for supporting me so far and omitting my senile rant.

You removed the hplip-gui & hplip 3.23.12 that is good.
Ignore the link I posted. You already have python 3.
Use the snap package that you installed. Using the USB connection,
you may have to set up the printer again. Try to print a test page, confirming it works.
With me rants just says your human.

I have set up the printer via USB again, so have fallen back to the previous solution.

It is not ideal as all my USB ports are occupied for peripherals such as the keyboard, mice, mics, webcams, and external storages. It is not convenient to remove a HDD just for printing a few pages, aside from de-mounting and remounting the device and risking to mess up file paths. To my non-educated self, the LAN was the spinal cord of my home computer environment. Now, I need a prosthesis.

Well, I will need to survive like this until hplip becomes compatible with Ubuntu 24.04... and hope that I do not need to come back here to ask a million questions again.

Thank you for your very appreciated guidance.

Yours sincerely,

Can you help with this problem?
