File extension question

Asked by E W

I purchased a cutting machine that supports GSD files. I sold the machine to a friend but kept a copy of the files on my hardrive to use with a new cutting machine. For some reason most of the files I have are listed as GST or GIF on my computer instead of GSD and I cannot access them. Is there a way to open or convert them to SVG files using my inkskape? I contacted the maker of the machine twice but they still have not acknowledged my problem.

It's not possible to open GSD files in Inkscape. It's not a well-documented format, which makes writing software to handle it very difficult. (However, Aaron Spike has made a start on understanding the format, and this may one day lead to an Inkscape extension for opening GSD files: http://code.google.com/p/cuft/ )

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do they have the correct file extension? Are they really GSD files? And what do you mean by GST (there seems to be more than one file format with this name)?

Ok, I had the Quickcuts Silhoutte SD machine, as an icon on my computer it comes up listed as Robomaster. The Silhoutte came with 25 designs that are listed as GSD on my computer. I can work with that file extension ok.

Then then ones that I purchased seperate from the Silhoutte Store do not show up as GSD files on my computer they are listed as GST files for some unknown reason. There is also another folder from Robomaster that shows you everything you purchased, just like if you were buying designs on the net. They are the ones that are listed as pictures with the GIF extension. Is there any way I can convert a GIF in order to work in my inkskape? If not then I guess I'm out of luck.
Thanks.

From a quick web search, it looks like the GST files are GSD files used as templates. If that's so, then changing the file extension to GSD may allow them to be used as GSD files.

GIF files can be opened in just about any image editor, including Inkscape. Have you tried that? (Of course, it's possible that they aren't really GIF files at all - without being able to examine one I can't say for sure.)

Can you help with this problem?
