Behavior of Gradient Editor dialog

Asked by Duggeek

When selecting an object with gradient applied, the "Fill and Stroke" panel responds predictably. This isn't so with the "Gradient editor" dialog, which appears not-dockable (floating, despite how preferences are set). That fact isn't so much a problem as the behavior of the dialog; it neither changes nor closes on its own when I change my selection.

When I select another object with (or without) gradient-fill, shouldn't Gradient Editor change as well?

As a proposal, the Gradient Editor should be responsive to the currently selected object. When the object is a type of graident-fill, the editor should reflect the assigned gradient as the object is selected, much like "Stroke and Fill" already does. When the object is a non-gradient or "null" fill, the dialog should be disabled (grayed-out).

Overall, I wonder why the Gradient Editor is not a sub-group or tab of the "Fill and Stroke" panel. To me, that would make infinitely more sense.

I could understand the preference to have a Gradient Editor persistently open to adjust one gradient, but shouldn't that be a "pin gradient" or similar feature? When selection changes to a different object, I would expect the dialog to change.

Thank you for making a truly valuable open-source illustration tool, keep up the good work!
