luminance key

I would like to key in a signature to a document without obscuring the background.
The signature is black over white - and I want black over transparent.
In video terms this would be called a luminance key or matte.
Is this possiible in inchscape?

If I understand you correctly, the best way to do this is probably to put the signature on a separate layer (above all other layers) and set the blend mode for the layer to "Multiply". Use the Layers dialog (Shift+Ctrl+L).
