Can't re-open saved .svg file

Asked by Adrian Lopez

Simply put, I downloaded several vector images yesterday and made some changes to them. I kept the originals and saved the altered versions as well. When I tried today to re-open them I find that while I can see the originals, all of the files I worked on come back as

Failed to load the requested file C:\..........

I saw something about trying to access the files through the command line, but after some time mucking around there I havent made any progress.

I'm at a total loss, hours of work is wasted if I can't recover these files.
Any help is much appreciated.

This may be the problem reported in bug 499257. If so, you should be able to make the files readable by removing all the 'xpacket' processing instructions (<?xpacket ... >) in a text editor. If this doesn't appear to be the problem, please post one of the broken SVG files for us to have a look at.

Thank you SAS, I appreciate the assist. I checked out the bug 499257 thread and agree it looks the same. Forgive a beginner's question, but can you tell me how I use a text editor to access the Document Metadata? (Im using Windows is that helps)

Most text editors should be suitable for this - I'll assume you're using Notepad, since this is included in Windows. Start Notepad, and use it to open one of the broken SVG files. Search for "xpacket"(using Find, on the Edit menu). If it's exactly like bug 499257, then you probably only need to change the ÿ character to an ASCII character (such as y). But if you like, you can remove the whole xpacket thing (everything from <?xpacket to ?> inclusive), since it's irrelevant to Inkscape anyway. Then save the file (preferably with a different filename, in case you did something wrong).

I had the same problem and solved it by removing all <?xpacket [...] ?> tags.

I hope someone can help me out with this. I can't open one of the emergency save files that was saved after Inkscape crashed on me the other day. Everytime I try to open the SVG the program crashes again. I tried the solutions on this thread and tried searching for xpacket tags when I opened the file in Wordpad, but it doesn't have anything like that :( I really need to recover my work.
