Going from Win XP to Win 7 Fonts don't transfer?

Asked by jakebuntu

I have several files I created using Inkscape on Windows XP. My computer recently died and now I have to use Windows 7. Luckily Inkscape seems to have installed well but when I open my old Inkscape files the fonts are all wrong.

The fonts are not stored in the SVG files, so they need to be installed on your computer. You probably had various fonts installed on your old computer that are not on your new machine.

You can find out what fonts an SVG file uses by opening the file in a text editor and searching for "font-family" (without the quotes) - search for all occurrences, as there may be several fonts used.

Once you know what fonts you need, the problem will be to find out where you can get the fonts. Perhaps some are freeware fonts, in which case you should be able to find them on various font sites. Others may have come from programs you had installed on the old computer, in which case you may still have install disks containing the fonts. Printers sometimes come with a CD containing a few fonts.

nevermind, I'm an amateur, I know it. Just copied all the fonts from my wife's XP to my new computer.... works fine now... hopefully this will help some other amateurs though!

Open old file in XP
Check what fonts you used
Go to C:Windows/Fonts and find the font you used. Copy it to new computer into C:Windows/Fonts...

DONE!

Peace

Thanks to those who make inkscape rock!
