How can I create a really cool star field as seen in space?

Asked by Arthur Sherman

I'm creating a really cool Sci-Fi Star Trek-ish scene which requires a nice star-field in deep space with maybe a colorful nebula nearby. Perhaps, a step by step tutorial on how to do this would be great. Thank you.

Hi,
My general advice would be : play around with whatever you find relevant.

For a simple star field, you may just need the spray tool. draw a white circle for a star, and "spray" it, varying the size (spray a lot of small ones, some bigger, and a few big) , you should obtain a decent starfield. (you may want to spray some blue or red ones to account for Doppler effects, and/or star-shape/gradients things to get near nasa-photography-like stars)

As for the nebula, no idea, Nature seems so much better at drawing than me :) Some tutorials about drawing a cloud might exist and help.

Can you help with this problem?
