Placing tiles along an circle

Asked by Matti Piilola

A few days ago I uploaded INKSCAPE in order to draw new dials for the instruments of an old car I am renovating. The work includes placing certain numbers and markings along the dial`s circumference. But no matter how much I study the INKSCAPE manual, I cannot understand how this is done. Please inform, how can I place the center of rotation into the centre point of the dial, and have the markings located evenly around it.

With kind regards

Thanks Mc for your answer. I have studied very hard already both the links
you gave me, but still don`t understand how it must be made. For instance,
if I make one object, number or what ever, locate it to the edge of the
dial, and try to make, say 12 copies (clones) of it so that they are
located evenly around the dial, how can I make the center of rotation into
the centre of the dial, and how can I tell to the program that I need those
12 pcs copies? I have made this (array) with Autocad earlier many times,
and it is a very easy thing to make, but I just cannot understand why it is
so difficult with INKSCAPE.

With kind regards
Matti

Hi,

First, you make the object,
Then you move its rotation center (appears as a cross at the center of the object when you can rotate it) to the rotation center you want as if you were going to move it;
Then you go to the "edit->clone->tiled clones" panel, and make 1 row of 12 columns, with "exclude tile" and rotation options set, and create the tiling

Thanks again Mc!

Still some difficulties: I can move the rotation center of my object into
dial centrum. Then I go to "edit-clone-tiled clones" panel but:

- where to add 1 row and 12 columns?
- cannot find "exclude tile"
- where are "rotation options?

Attached some snaps of my tiled clone panel:

Thanks Mc, this helped. Now I understand how to create tiled clones into a circle. Thanks again!
