basic page / layout

Asked by andrew mulcock

Two questions, related, but different form a new bee to Inkscape.

The page style, I set Inks cape to A4 landscape, but that information does not get transferred to the printer, I have to each time go into the printer dialog and r ember to set landscape.

If I use Cdraw or even word, once i set the paper in the document, the printer puts it round the right way .
what am I doing wrong ?

And :
   multiple pages in a document,
I can only seem to make one page of document per file. So if I have a drawing that goes over three pages of A4, I need three separate files. Again what am I doing wrong, how can I make multiple pages in one file ?

I can't help with the printer issue. Sorry.

But for multiple page doc, I'm not sure if I understand what you want to do. If you want a document to be the size of 3 A4 pages, then you can calculate whatever size that turns out to be, and set a custom size. File menu > Document Properties > Page tab > Page size > Custom size.

However, if you do need multilple pages, try this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape-pages/

looks like the multi pages works, thanks, Brynn, a good add on. well done.

I guess that will be the default in the next release ? it can't stay as an add on can it,

As for printing problems,
that sort of puts a big damper on things,

if inkscape can't talk to the printers , and remember how I set up the pages to print out between prints, thats a killer.

Inkscape has notoriously weak printer support, imo. Even though the long awaited version 0.49 has been renamed to 0.91, Inkscape still hasn't yet released a version 1.0. So there is still much growth ahead.

As far as I understand, multiple page support is an Inkscape extension. And as long as there's a working extension, I doubt the devs will find any reason to build it right in. But I don't understand how the devs make their decisions, so I can't say for sure.

If you're seriously interested, you could check out the timeline and related milestones: https://launchpad.net/inkscape/+series. I wouldn't know without looking those things up myself.

Thanks Brynn

For me I think Inkscape is no improvement on Open Office or even MS Word drawing packages,
in many ways its a backward user step, so I think I'm going to ditch it,

pity, the actual part of drawing was very good,
   the output , not so.

The other person that In know who uses Inkscape, who recommended it to us ,
it turns out they only do small drawings, which they then cut / stick / paste into Word !

Thanks Again,
