How to copy layers between different SVG files?

Asked by post16

My apologies if this is in a sticky, but I could not find it. How does one copy a layer from one SVG file to another? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, post16

I don't know of any function to copy a layer in Inkscape. Possibly it could be done using the XML Editor, but I couldn't give any specific info about that.

But if you close all layers except the one you want to copy, then you can use Ctrl A (Select All), then Copy, then Paste into new doc. In the new doc, be sure to have the specific layer that you want, already activated, when you paste.

Note that using Copy/Paste on a Mac can produce unwanted effects. If you are using Mac, then use the following method instead. File menu > Save a Copy. This saves the whole file, as it is, in a whole new file (which you can name any way you want). Then if you only need the content of that 1 layer, in the new doc, delete everything else.

If you are using a Mac, post a reply to that effect, and we can give you some more tips about using Inkscape with Mac.

This would be a very helpful function to have in this program.

Can you help with this problem?
