problem with selecting nodes

I have marked an object with the node editor and then you're supposed to be able to select nodes (and they will be blue) by either just clicking on them or Shift-click on them, but when I do that, nothing happens. The status bar still shows that 0 nodes are selected.
Do I do something wrong or is it something else ?

Selecting your object and then the command Path-Object to Path should allow you to see and select nodes with the node editor.

Omg thank you so much c (cjue) for answering this question!! I was about to ask the same thing Bella did, and I am so glad i foudn the answer! It's so frustrating with all these little details to make the picture perfect. Inkscape is so confusing and annoying unless you know how to fix the little things. Thanks!!:)
