Linked image not found and big red x

Asked by Kim

When I open the file with a drawing that was made over a PNG image, a warning "Linked image not found" comes up with a big red x over the drawing and the PNG image is gone. This never happened with the drawing before when I opened it up.

Hi Kim, I think that you've probably moved or deleted the original file. There is an answer here for that:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Images_in_my_document_disappear_and_I_get_.22Linked_Image_Not_Found.22.

Two routes are quoted. The first is to use Effects menu -> Images -> Embed All Images

The second method is to trace the bitmap and convert it to a vector image but that doesn't give an exact likeness but rather something to work off. It results in a smaller file size than embedding though. The links for tracing a bitmap in Inkscape are: http://www.inkscape.org/doc/tracing/tutorial-tracing.html and http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html
