How do I erase unwanted portions of a drawing, is there an eraser tool

Version 0.47 will have an eraser tool.
You can compile -or grab some precompiled binary of- the development version to test that and other cool upcoming features.
Meanwhile, if you want to workaround that, you can use the calligraphy tool on the parts that you want to remove, then use path>difference (or directly CTRL+-) to substract the calligraphy strokes off the drawing. It works only on single or combined paths, not on groups, though.
