Can Inkscape be used to earn money with?

Asked by Joe Bartolo

Can you help me please? I'm designing a new font which I intend to sell through the Myfonts website and I wanted to know if it's ok to use Inkscape for this purpose, i.e. to earn money.

I'm also using the Font Creator 5 program to package this font, but I'm having trouble importing the designs from Inkscape. I keep getting a message "error 53" whenever I try to do this. But I don't have any trouble importing from Corel Printhouse. Surely these are all vector programs?

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance!

The answer is yes. GPL with no way restricts the way you use or license the whatever output you get from GPL'ed program (with one exception, when the output contains the actual source code of the program, never seen this case before). See it yourself: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLOutput

The answer to your second question: Font Creator does not support SVG. Mail them asking about this feature for future releases. This could be the lifesaver and open their eyes :)
In the meantime when they are implementing this, you could save as WMF file from inkscape and open these files with Font Creator.

With regards to my second question and the temporary solution offfered by mahfiaz'; I tried saving as WMF but still couldn't import to FontCreator. And, something else I wanted to mention; when I try to open this WMF with Inkscape itself, I get a "Runtime error" message and the program closes down. Any idea what's causing this?

Possibly it's a bug in the exporter. The WMF format has been removed from the export list in development versions, so I guess it wasn't working as it should.

Do you know what formats does FontCreator support for import?

Hi Guillermo,

Yes, gif; jpg; jpeg; png; emf; ico; wmf and bmp. As you can see it does
support wmf, that's why I can't understand why it will not import files I
have saved in inkscape of this format. I would appreciate any help you
could give me with this problem.

Thanks a lot!

Joe Bartolo

Try with uniconvertor.
http://sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor

It allows to convert between a wide range of vector file formats.
You could use it to convert your svg file to wmf and try to import it in FontCreator.
The sintax would be easy, just:
uniconv file.svg file.wmf

Hi Guillermo,

I downloaded the programs you mentioned, then I tried exporting from
Inkscape using a PNG format.
And bingo, it worked! When I imported from FontCreator, there was no
problem.
However, I'm still not sure what exactly is going on or why it worked since
I didn't use any uniconv file etc...
Nevertheless, many thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!
I'll let you know if all goes well.

Best Regards,

Joe Bartolo

It worked because FontCreator accepts png files. But png files are bitmap images, not vectors.
I don't know how the program FontCreator works because I've never used it, but generally these kind of programs import vector data (since fonts are vectors, not bitmaps).
But if it worked, then use PNG and do it that way. There's nothing wrong with it.
Uniconvertor converts between vector formats only, not bitmaps.
Please mark this subject as solved if you consider that your question was answered correctly.

- Inkscape CAN be used for making money.
- You can export as PNG if you want to import your drawing into FontCreator.

Hi Joe,

you are not alone. I know further font designers who would like to use free software
- in order to create free fonts (there is also the option of dual licensing, so you can
sell your fonts and allow free software projects to use them for free).

What recommendations where given to you by the FontCreator team?

As far as I can tell, Inkscape could support free font designers much better by
offering some font specific export format (beyond PS) that could be used by
FontForge. Maybe this is worth its own wishlist bug:

1st time, you define the name of the font and the file name.
With any further selected glyph, Inkscape asks on export about its name/position.
This way you can export an entire font step by step very quickly.

It's maybe a bad reason to tell that Corel works this way,
but it is very obvious that Inkscape has many (e.g. caligraphic) features
that are valuable for font designers that will probably never be implemented
in GNU's only vector editor FontForge (as long as this great software is being
developed by a one-man-team).

What do you think?
