banner printing in Linux from Inkscape

Asked by pbhj

I'm trying to print some large letters from Inkscape.

See example file at http://alicious.com/openclipartorg/, is http://alicious.com/wp-content/outlined-letters-large_paintyourownpottery.svg

I want the letters to span multiple pages of A4 printed in landscape.

Just wondering how others would go about doing this - producing the SVG file is a couple of minute job but I can't readily see how I can take this SVG file and span it across multiple pages for printing.

Banner printing would be an option but the only settings I can find for that require me to make the image on (say) an A0 page and then select the particular sheets to print, inevitably their will be a break down the horizontal and vertical centres and so all the letters will be split.

Any ideas ...?

At the moment that isn't possible straight from inkscape, but there are several applications that can do it.
Those programs generally work with bitmap images or pdf files, so you could take advantage of inkscape's exporters and use one of those programs with the resulting file.
In linux you can use photoprint, pdfposter or poster (uses EPS files) for that task.

I am trying to print a large .svg image for use as the pattern base for some mosaics. The Inkscape image measures some 500 x 500 millimetres. I have downloaded Photoprint, (pdfpoter and poster don't appear in my Add/Remove programs listing).
As I can't get it to work I'm clearly doing something wrong!
Using Ubuntu Hardy on 32bit, 2.25GB RAM.
