Path>Difference question

Asked by Jim

I'm trying to cut an image in half. I've made and avatar and have put it in a picture. I want to put my avatar on the edge of the picture so it seems that he's only half in the image. However i can't figure out a way to cut the image of him in half cleanly without ungrouping every shape that encompases the avatar. Is there a way to simply cut an image cleanly in half, thus getting rid of one half and keeping the other intact for use?

Path>Difference works only for single paths, not for groups. For a group you can use a clipping path.
Do this:
1) create a vertical line and align it to the center of the group.
2) Create a rectangle of the size of the half you want to keep or larger
3) align the rectangle to the left or right of the line
4) select the rectangle and the group and go to Object>Clip>Apply. Remove the line and you're done.
