a shape with either transparency or gradient is converted to bitmap when printed

I am designing a logo to be used on the web and also for print. All solid filled shapes print cleanly. All shapes filled with either a transparent colour or a gradient are converted to low resolution bitmaps. I expect them to print as cleanly as the solids.

I guess you're using the stable 0.46 version, wich has some issues with printing.
You should try with a development version (in the downloads section of www.inkscape.org there are nightly build to try).

As a workaround, you can export the whole image as a high resolution png bitmap and print it from other program.
