is it a vector image or a raster image? (when you select it, does it say "image" (means raster image) or something else (means vector image) in the status bar?)

if it's a vector image, it might be grouped, so ungroup it (Object menu> Ungroup Shift+Ctrl+G), select your white background, and delete it, or change it's color/opacity in the Fill and Stoke (Shift+Ctrl+F) dialogue.

if it's a raster image, you can't do it in Inkscape, you'll have to take de white background away in a raster image editing software like Gimp/Photoshop.

Can you help with this problem?
