I have two overlapping hexagons and simply need to separate them into two

Hello, sorry in advance if my question is too basic, but I've just downloaded Inkscape and am getting up to speed.
I have generated a logo that consists of two hexagons that overlap. Not sure if I'm using the right terminology, but neither hexagon has a fill. However, the hexagonal outlines are not simply a stroke, either. It's like each hexagon has an outer hexagon and an inner hexagon, each consisting of six sides. And then, of course, there are two of these shapes that overlap. I am trying to separate them so that I can make one hexagon a color, and the "underlapping" hexagon a different color.
Does anyone have suggestions for how I can achieve this? Thanks so much in advance!
