How do I seperate part of an image so I can substitute something else in it's place?

Asked by willsketch

I have a vector image that I need to alter. Part of the image has a face, I need to exchange the face for an alternate one. The only way I could think to do it was to delete the nodes that make up the face, but that still leaves a big black line from the hair line to the neck (the face is in 3/4 profile, I'm switching to a profile view). I've tried selecting the nodes and clicking the break path button, but while this does something I can't figure out what it does.

The development version has an eraser tool that can be useful for that task.
You can get a nightly build in the downloads section of inkscape.org
The other alternative is to use a clip or mask

Okay, so I've downloaded the developement version. I was able to achieve what I wanted to do.

This is how I did it.

You will need a an unzip utility to do it. The inkscape files are compressed using 7Z compression. WinZip 12 will unzip those, but I don't own it, and didn't want to pay the $30 dollars U.S. to buy it so I found a free decompressor here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=sevenzip&filename=7z462.exe&use_mirror=softlayer

on the orange banner at the top you will see a button that says "click here"

follow your promps, download 7-Zip

then go here for the inkscape development version:

http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?M=D

click on the latest version and download.

Eventhough I had 7-Zip I had to show my computer that it had the ability to unzip and run the files. To do that, use your OS's search function, search for "Inkscape", to find where you downloaded the new file (It is temting to rename it to just "Inkscape", I recomend leaving the filename as is, this way you retain the latest "Official" release in case of a crash and you also are able to differentiate from future development versions).

Right click on the file, find "7-Zip" in the drop down list.

Then click Extract files

I then had to use the search function of my OS to find it, just using "Inkscape" as the new search term, you will notice that there are several more files than previously,

Under the Files heading you will see a file with the name "InkscapeNNNNNN-NNNNNNN" (N are the relevent numbers of the version you have)

Right click on it, Left click "Send To", Left Click "Desktop" to create a shortcut, I renamed mine Inkscape (2) to differentiate.

No, sorry, there isn't, you can't do anything like what I wanted to do while using the official version. And that's all pretty step by step, if you are using a semi-complicated program like a vector image program you should easily be able to follow those steps.
