How do I make a shadow of letters?

I am trying to create words and add a shadow to the background of the connected letters.

Duplicate the text with CTRL+D. Paint it with the desired shadow color (clicking on a color swatch on the bottom of the screen), nugde it a little with the arrow keys to apply the offset and send it backwards (PgDn).
You can optionally make it soft using the blur slider (in the fill and stroke dialog).

The development version (what will be Inkscape 0.47 by june) has a filter that makes a drop shadow with a single click.

click the object(letter, shape, etc..) then from the menu click the "Object" - "Fill and Stroke(shift+ctrl+F)" then use the "blur" control and "opacity, %"
