how to make connectors adopt right angles

I want to use the connectors tool to connect boxes in a schematic block diagram. I want the connectors to route around other boxes automatically, but I want the angles on the connectors to be right angles only.

I'm afraid it's not possible at the moment.
However, the bezier tool has a right angles mode in the development version of inkscape, and it may be useful for the task.

You can fill a feature request for that in the Bugs section if you want.
