arrange a drawn object to a curve

hi, I have created several linear designs and I wanted to make them curve. I can make text take a curved path but seem unable to do the same thing with anything else.

Using Inkscape.0.46 with MS XP.

Really love this software

I have managed to make the pattern/linear design curve using bend path, which is good. I would like to make it follow a formal shape... a square or a circle.. can this be done simply rather than nudging it into shape by moving the nodes?

Using the path along curve LPE (Live Path Effect).
The effects have been improved in the development version. You should get a nightly build from inkscape.org and try the new features.
