text within SVG problems

Asked by Paul Dowling

Apologies if this is already documents somewhere- For some reason i can't get text within an svg to display in recent versions of safari (disappears) or firefox (entire text box is blacked out) properly. It is only times new roman. Works when i convert text to path but obviously this is a huge pain. Any help would be much appreciated.

PS- realise this is in no way JessyInks fault but don't know where else to ask.... Thanks

Additional info- I opened an svg someone else made and it worked- thus I assume problem is with the file that i create in Inkscape (with or without JessyInk)

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I have been out of town for a while.

I have not yet encountered the problem you mentioned. However, I will try an see, if I can reproduce it. It would be helpful, if you could provide the exact version numbers of your Inkscape installation as well as of the browsers and the operating system you are using.

Cheers,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,

No worries thanks for responding. Below is the steps to replicate the problem on my computer, as you can see it occurs without even using JessyInk (thus isn't really your problem), it just prevents me from using JessyInk...

Operating System: OSX 10.5.8
X11 Version: XQuartz 2.3.3.2
Inkscape version: 0.46
Safari Version: 4.0.3
Firefox Version: 3.0.11

Steps

1. Open inkscape and draw a colored rectangle to cover most of page as a background
2. Create 2 textboxes, one saying “this is normal text”, and another saying “this text has been converted to a path. ->
3. then i convert the latter to a path
4. Save as a “inkscape svg” or a “plain svg” (same result for both)
5. Open file in safari or firefox
6. In safari the unconverted text disappears, in firefox it is replace by a black box. The converted (to path) text looks fine in both

I can provide screenshots if you want but doubt they will really add much information.

Thanks a lot
Paul

Hi Paul,

I tried to reproduce the problem on my system (Ubuntu 9.04) using Firefox 3.0. However, the text appeared fine (although there was a slight difference between the text and the path). I think the best thing would be to move the question to Inkscape directly. I think there is quite a vibrant community of people using Inkscape on the OSX. Maybe someone there experienced a similar problem.

Cheers,
Hannes

Setting the status of the question back to "open" before moving it to the Inkscape project.

It's an issue with 'flowed text': Inkscape uses part of a draft SVG 1.2 specification for this feature that is not part of the current SVG 1.1. If you need the flowed text to be displayed outside of Inkscape, use 'Text > Convert to Text' before saving a copy of the document for external use.

Flowed text is created when you use the text tool and draw a frame on the canvas before entering the text. If you don't need flowed text just click once on the canvas and enter the text directly (without drag-opening a frame).

Can you help with this problem?
