Tracing object will not preview even when selected

I have just started using the program and have seen all tutorials but cannot get any objects to trace. I select the objects and go to path, trace bitmap, choose brightness cuttoff, update and no preview shows up. Have tried simple imports and used the star tool in the program. All react the same.

You can only trace bitmaps (e.g., an imported JPEG). There would be no point in tracing anything else, as it's already vector.

Thanks for the information. I tried another image and it worked fine. Now if I can just get the image to import into signcut. Seems like the two programs aren't communicating.
