How does stitch sub-paths work?

When Stitch sub-paths is selected from the menu (shift ctrl 7) it has no effect on the path. How is this activated?

You need to use a path that has more than one subpath (usually just two). See the Inkscape guide for details: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-LivePathEffects-StitchSubPaths.html

The Inkscape guide had the missing step - the subpaths had to be combined. Thanks!
