Contribute to upstream using Launchpad Translations

I would like to use Launchpad to contribute to GNOME translations. Is this already possible? What is the preferred method to do so? Who is the one to talk to?

We are not yet able to handle GNOME translations directly in Launchpad. However, you can translate the version in Ubuntu which is almost latest version in GNOME (although sometimes it doesn't have latest data).

Also, you can translate fairly recent versions of GNOME as part of Ubuntu translations, then download that file, and submit it upstream. However, note that you'd still have to coordinate with upstream GNOME translation team (to get to know the terminology to use, not to duplicate work, etc.). You'd be basically using Launchpad as a tool to translate GNOME PO files, and then submit them back to GNOME translation team for your language.

You can find all the GNOME modules as included in Ubuntu at: https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy/

Note that this means that you'll be translating latest packages in Ubuntu (which are usually latest tarballs as released by GNOME, with a couple of days of delay), and not the GNOME subversion repository.

Maybe Erdal Ronahi, Kurdish GNOME and Ubuntu translator, can help by sharing a few tips on how to best organise that (I remember him using Launchpad to translate GNOME).
