It should download image from the Web

Asked by Anders Feder

This is more of a suggestion (I didn't know where else to file it), but this program should really be able to download the latest live image from the Web and install that so one does not have to waste time and blank CDs to burn a live CD just throw it in the trash afterwards.

The idea is that this might become part of the Live CD one day. Since this tool needs some other parts that are part of the distribution you want to install (such as mtools and syslinux), you need the distribution anyway in order to run the tool. Running this tool from the Live CD also has the advantage that your language and keyboard settings can be used from the running system.

(If you don't want that, you can fool the tool into thinking it is running from a Live CD by mounting one to /cdrom - but this not the recommended way.)

(The program seems to crash after a few minutes of reading the CD though)

Hi Anders, please file a bug where you define what "seems to crash" means. Are you sure it wasn't working any more? Copying the data to USB can take some time. I will upload a version with an improved progress indicator soon.

Sorry, that comment was intended for my other question, https://answers.launchpad.net/liveusb/+question/35323. Will file a report there.

FYI, if you're looking for a tool which downloads or uses an existing ISO file, and isn't restricted to having to be run from the Ubuntu liveCD, see UNetbootin at http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ which can run from an existing Windows or Linux install.
