Netflix audio works, but no video

Asked by bryanb

Im wondering if this is a common issue someone can help with.

Im not sure what information you'll need, but feel free to ask, and i'll try to supply you with what you might need to better answer my problem.

I have a computer, an Athlon 64 X2, with a nVidia Geforce 7200 GS video card, and using the S-video to an CRT TV. On this computer I have installed XBMCbuntu. Not even sure what version this is, 12.2, I think. The base Ubuntu I believe is 12.10.

I used the below to install netflix-desktop:
http://www.tmib.net/netflix-xbmcbuntu-using-wine

I can get to the point where one runs the application from the 'desktop' in XBMCbuntu. Wine starts, Firefox starts, and I can log into Netflix. And here is the rub:
I can play a video, and sounds works fine, but I get no video, just black screen.

I can pause the video with the (temporarily attached) space bar on the keyboard. And then get the toolbar in Firefox, and go back and choose another video, and same thing: audio, but black video.

thanks.

oooo.

I just noticed question 219112 looks very similar to mine. I'll have to try that suggested solution. When I originally installed XBMCbuntu, I had a GeForce 6200 installed. I didn't ever specifically install a nVidia driver. Only the default XMBCbuntu. I now have installed a GeForce 7300 GS card. It looks much better on my CRT TV, at 480i. But still no specific nVidia driver.

attempted to update the nvidia drivers, using the ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates repository. This made no change.

I do have a xorg.conf file, and the compositing is already disabled.

Hi bryanb, compositing actually needs to be _enabled_ for things to work properly. You might also try disabling GPU acceleration (netflix-desktop --disable-hw-acceleration). If that works then please let me know so that I can collect some information about your graphics card.

Excellent.

Not sure how I git it into me head that compositing needed to be off, but turning it on worked!

thanks!
