Netflix-Desktop wont start.... "Wine cant find ... Firefox.exe"

Asked by Curtis Benham

I'm having a similar problem as Dwayne, except his fix didn't work for me... I tried going into "configure Wine" to add the application but couldn't find it either. I did a Firefox install, which completed and a link showed up on my desktop; however, Netflix-Desktop --showdebug still reports it can't finde Firefox.exe ... and I can't find it listed in "Configure Wine". I'm running UBUNTU 12.04 LTS without Windows (it is not a dual-boot machine). I'm thinking that ConfigWine ought to show the Firefox application in the GUI... but it doesn't.

curtis@--------:~$ netflix-desktop --showdebug

Can you tell me which bug/question you're referencing? Usually when this happens you need to wipe the profile folder (rm -Rf $HOME/.wine-browser).

Hello Erich,

Well... I was looking at Bug# 108551 in which you recommended:

rm -Rf ~/.netflix-desktop
netflix-desktop

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem; HOWEVER, after doing
your recommended "rm -RF $HOME/.wine-browser", I ran netflix-desktop
--showdebug from the command line. A whole bunch of stuff happened - wine
configuration, "fixme" processes, etc. and then netflix-desktop worked. A
very BIG THANKYOU!

I'm a former Windows "semi-power" user who finally had enough of Mr.
Gates taking over my machine whenever he felt like it. Now I'm a Ubuntu
"noob". It's been a bit of a rocky ride - had to reinstall a couple
times. Once Mr. Gates ran CHKDSK and wiped out my Ubuntu OS, so now I no
longer even do a dual-boot. Once again, thanks... I have sooo much to
learn about LINUX.

Regards,

Curtis

No problem Curtis, I'm glad the solution was so simple. You might also want to be aware that if you install "pipelight" (http://pipelight.net/cms/installation.html) then you can use the Silverlight plugin directly in your normal browser. Doing this also means that netflix-desktop uses your Linux Firefox browser instead of running the Windows Firefox browser, which is much faster and can help a lot if you have any performance issues.
