Is Following possible? Communication between instances on different compute nodes

Hi everybody,
is following scenario possible? I have several compute nodes and instances running on different nodes. Instances running on one node can communicate to each other, but instances on different nodes can not even ping each other at the moment.
My compute nodes only have 1 NIC. I do not know if this scenario is even possible with my setup. What would I need for it? Is it possible compute nodes having only 1 NIC?
